Wet pitch, rain delay final day in Perth

18 December 2017 05:08

No play was possible in the opening session of day five of the third Ashes Test in Perth, in a boost to England's hopes of retaining the urn against Australia.

Rain and wet patches on the WACA pitch saw no balls bowled before lunch was called early on Monday.

However, play is expected to begin straight after lunch, although ground staff were still working on drying the areas of concern on the pitch.

It is unclear just how areas of the wicket became wet, but play would otherwise have been possible – even briefly – on day five.

England are 132-4 – trailing by 127 runs – in their second innings and are staring at a 3-0 series deficit and Ashes defeat.

Dawid Malan (28) and Jonny Bairstow (14) will resume if play is possible, as expected, after the lunch break.
