Jonny Bairstow brought up his fourth Test century before England collapsed in the first session on day two of the third Ashes Test against Australia.
Bairstow (119) and Dawid Malan (140) built on their fifth-wicket partnership at the WACA Friday before the hosts fought back.
England lost 35-6 to finish their innings, bowled out for 403 after appearing set for a much bigger total in Perth.
Bairstow and Malan had appeared comfortable before they saw their 237-run partnership ended, triggering a collapse.
Mitchell Starc (4-91) and Josh Hazlewood (3-92) found their lines early as the tourists struggled to score after resuming at 305-4.
Malan survived a review for lbw after being given not out, with replays showing Starc's delivery was missing leg stump.
While the first four overs of the day were maidens, Bairstow and Malan found their rhythm, setting England's highest fifth-wicket partnership against Australia.
Bairstow brought up his century and celebrated by headbutting his helmet, but Australia would strike.
Malan skied a delivery from Nathan Lyon (1-73) and substitute fielder Peter Handscomb took a wonderful diving catch.
Moeen Ali (0) lasted just two balls as he edged a Pat Cummins (2-84) bouncer to Steve Smith at slip, giving Australia a much-needed boost.
Chris Woakes (8) was the next to go as he flicked Hazlewood to Cummins in the deep before Starc bowled Bairstow as England lost 21-4.
Craig Overton (2) was unable to control a Hazlewood bouncer and Stuart Broad (12) was the last to go.
