Malan pleased to silence the doubters with maiden century

14 December 2017 15:28

Dawid Malan was left feeling satisfied after proving his ability to cut it at the highest level with a classy hundred on day one of the third Ashes Test against Australia.

The left-hander reached a maiden century in the five-day format at the WACA on Thursday, making an unbeaten 110 to steer England to 305-4 at stumps in Perth.

When Malan arrived in Australia, his place in the squad - along with those of top-order colleagues Mark Stoneman and James Vince - was questioned among some quarters of the hosts' media.

Earlier this year, Malan endured a baptism of fire upon his Test bow with scores of 1, 10, 18 and 6 in two matches against South Africa, but Thursday's almost flawless display - he was dropped at slip on 92 - felt a world away from those early struggles against the Proteas.

"After those first two games I didn't think I'd ever score a run in Test cricket," Malan told a media conference. "I've found a way and adjusted my game so it can work at this level.

"Today it was my day, a few things went my way and I managed to capitalise on that.

"Whether people know your name or don't know your name, it's nice to put the doubts to bed.

"The three of us have never felt under pressure, we have had backing from the coach and the captain, it's just that every time you open a newspaper you read how bad you are.

"It's nice to tick the box to prove that you can score hundreds.

"I feel I have played pretty well in the games - I haven't felt like I was going to get out at any point. I have just given it away or got a good ball in other innings.

"When I walked out to bat it was tough and then an hour later there was another tough period but I got through. I was under a bit of pressure coming into the game so it was nice to get some runs, especially when the team needed them."
