Foster joins home favourite Rumford atop Perth leaderboard

16 February 2017 12:08

Brett Rumford and Mark Foster were the early pacesetters at the revamped World Super 6 Perth after the opening round.

This year's event at Lake Karrinyup Country Club features a change of format, with a second cut after 54 holes and the top 24 entering a matchplay scenario to decide the winner over the final day's play.

But it was business as usual on Thursday, Rumford and Foster sharing a one-stroke lead over the chasing pack after carding six-under 66s.

Foster is aiming to end a 14-year title drought on the European Tour, his last victory coming at the Dunhill Championship in 2003, while Rumford last tasted success at the China Open four years ago.

Both men made seven birdies and a single bogey, but there are plenty in contention heading into Friday's action with 23 players separated by just two shots.

"It was good, it was solid," said Perth native Rumford, who enjoyed the chance to sleep in his own bed in preparation for the event.

"I think it was a pair of 33s so not much bad golf. The greens are a little more receptive than they have been other years because of the rain we've had but yeah, it's a good start."
